“Light has no business with darkness”—2 Corinthians 6:14
Be prepared to lose some or most of your old friends. Even before I began to openly speak about what Jesus did to save me, my friends acted differently towards me. The Lord began to remove people from my life as well, and this is to be expected. This is God separating you a bit. People will tell you Jesus hung out with sinners, but He didn’t do so without witnessing to them.
So, hanging out with your old friends and doing all the same things you did before isn’t what Jesus wants for us. Pray for your friends, witness to them in love…but going back to the bars and parties and trying to be the ‘old you’ is just going right back to what Jesus saved you from. There are no ‘cool Christians’. Whoever is a friend to the world is an enemy to the Lord. I learned this the hard way, and most have to really experience this for themselves to really see that we’re new creations in Christ now. As for me, I didn’t want to leave my old friends…so the Lord removed them gradually. In the end, they didn’t want to have much to do with someone who talked about repenting of Spiritism, because they were still in that life.
Find a church, but not just any church. Being an online Christian isn’t going to help you in the long run. It’s okay until you find a body of believers, but we were meant to have fellowship with other Christians. Most former new agers are church hurt, so know that God will be mending your heart in this. People in church are flawed too, and keep praying if you have an issue with someone. God wants us to love our neighbors and our enemies.
Read your Bible… really study the Word and let it change you. There’s warfare against going to church and against reading the Holy Word of the Lord. There are blessings in our spirit when we do what the Lord asks. I don’t mean prosperity blessings, but true blessings of peace and the fruits of the Holy Spirit.
Please be on the alert for churches that have let new age beliefs infiltrate them. This is sadly more and more common. You might try to warn them in love, and God can use you in this. There’s also another issue that is more complicated to warn about, and that is the fact that many churches have started focusing on extra biblical signs and wonders…and have been led astray. Research the term: New Apostolic Reformation to learn more about this. Modern day prophecy conferences are rife with this, and have self-proclaimed prophets who are no different than the psychics in the new age.
Be alert for the One World Religion/Universalism deception: people claiming that anyone with any path can go to heaven, or that Allah and Jehovah are the same, or that God has a secret name, or the Hebrew Roots Movement. Also be alert to the prosperity false gospel and the Name it/Claim it false gospel.
There’s a difference between Obedience and Legalism. We need to be obedient to the changes the Holy Spirit wants to make in our lives, but we can’t get into heaven on our good works alone. This sounds simple, but really is complex. The minute we start feeling we’re superior to others who are sinning…we’ve lost sight of what Jesus did at the Cross. None of us are worthy, because none of us are Holy. But for God so loved the world, he gave His only son. It is only through the cross that we are saved. Grace is a free gift, but not a license to sin…not a get out of hell free card.
Warfare is real, and many haven’t experienced it like a former new ager has. However, we don’t have to be afraid anymore. We are saved, and Satan cannot snatch us out of our Heavenly Father’s hands anymore! We don’t want to get lukewarm, but we don’t have to worry about Satan stealing our salvation away either. Jesus died so that we might live! The ‘Once Saved Always Saved’ argument (to me) means we need to be fully surrendered Christians. This is the Narrow Path. We need to be living for Jesus, fully sold out to His will. We cannot be lukewarm and get into heaven, but even if we backslide and sin…Jesus has us in the palm of His hands. Again, this is not a license to use Grace as a get out of hell free card. This is a complicated hotly debated topic, so this is just what Jesus has shown me about it.
Speaking in Tongues: You don’t have to speak in tongues to be saved. Be alert that speaking in tongues at some churches is not done biblically. Speaking in tongues cannot be forced and needs an interpreter. This is a sensitive topic. Personally, I believe speaking in tongues is a gift given to some. Therefore, in churches that try to induce this gift–that is occultic.
There’s a lot of Christians who say that God doesn’t speak to His children anymore. They are adamant that God only speaks to us by reading the Bible. While this is true that God never speaks anything that contradicts His word, silencing the voice of the Holy Spirit is not biblical. Anyone who hears God speak to them will not go against God’s Word. The Lord speaks to us to teach and comfort us.
On the other hand, there’s a lot of Christians who say God speaks to them….and then they utter something unbiblical. These are self-professing Christians, who are often very well respected. These are false teachers, but they have deceived many people. They sometimes advocate hearing the mind of God, or writing down whatever comes to your mind in a journal. Both of these practices are occultic and dangerous.
God does not change, and we are told not to harden our hearts when He speaks to us. However, many claim to hear from the Lord and are false teachers. We must have discernment. We must test the spirits.
Do not lose your first love. You will start to see sin as the Lord sees it, and you might start to be angry and your heart may get hardened to the world for a second. However, always remember where you were when Jesus pulled you out of the pit. We are not to judge the unsaved. However, we are to expose evil and exhort and rebuke false teachers from within the body of Christ—but pray for them! Furthermore, a loving rebuke from a brother or sister in Christ is a GOOD thing. Done in love, this is a warning and we need this from our church family!
The times are biblical. God tells us not to fear or obsess about the details, but don’t put our heads in the sand about eschatology either. Live each day with thanks to the Lord and witnessing to others. Keep your lamps filled, but serve others while you wait for the Lord’s return—meaning: live your life as if God were to come back any minute, but don’t stop living your life even though He could.
Nobody but the Father in Heaven knows the time of the Second Coming, so don’t get hung up on dates. However, we are told to know the season of the Lord’s return, so don’t be afraid to look forward to that. This is the Narrow Path again. You might feel like giving up sometimes, but God will not abandon you!
There are certain deliverance ministries who are the same as the new age, and many self-professing Christians who will try to pray over you…but always make sure to ask the Lord for discernment. Some of these people are not from the Lord, and when they pray over you it is witchcraft. This is a hotly debated topic, and while those of us who were saved from the new age did need deliverance from demonic oppression…we’ve seen that the ‘Deliverance Ministries’ are rife with deception. So, I would say that having a trusted pastor pray with you, bind Satan, and rebuke any demons from you or your family is a good thing. Some demons only come out through prayer and fasting though, so keep that in mind.
However, if someone approaches you online saying they can remove some family curse…I would run the other way. From personal experience, there are women who have approached me like this online, and it was the same as witchcraft. Again, I’m not an expert here, but please pray for discernment. The bigger issue here is that Jesus sanctifies us in His timing, and sometimes we’re not ready to repent from a certain sin that has a stronghold in us. If we go and get a demon rebuked from us by someone, and then we go back to that same sin, the Bible tells us that this results in more spiritual bondage.
